This family is very near and dear to my heart.  Abbey and I both lost our first babies in very similar circumstances, only 6 months apart, and we both went on to have healthy boys the second time around.  Seems like yesterday I was waiting anxiously alongside them for baby Edward’s arrival, and now he is already approaching the one year mark!  I can’t believe how fast time flies.  We had been trying to do some family portraits of them for quite awhile, and finally got a little bit of time while they were visiting Lincoln City. Love these three!

Between photo sessions, editing, and the ‘terrible almost-2’s’ setting in around here, I’m a bit behind on blogging.  I’ve been meeting so many wonderful families, and the S family was no exception.  The day of their shoot was beautiful, clear, and sunny, but the wind on the beach was FREEZING.  Oh and did I mention there were 29 of them?!  Working with a group that size was new for me, but they were such great sports!

When I first scheduled this session with the J family, it didn’t take long for us to realize that we actually lived next door to each other!  They were getting the whole family together for a reunion and wanted to do some updated family portraits.  I was happy to help, and we lucked out with an awesome softly-lit, overcast morning on the beach.  They did such an excellent job coordinating their outfits and had so many fun ideas for different poses.  I easily filled one of my memory cards and part of another before we finished.  But this session resulted in more than just a ton of fun pictures for me.  As I went through editing them, I would zoom in to check focus, etc. and was blown away to witness the love in what seemed, on the surface, to be an ordinary look between family members.  THAT, for me, is what this is all about.  I can easily get caught up in worrying about the technical details–the exposure, the light, the composition, etc. etc.  But it is the moment, the love between families, the laughter, and just…real life, that is my ultimate goal. I feel honored to be allowed to capture all of that through my lens.

A(nother) big thank you to the J family for sharing your beautiful family with me!

Katie and Heidi – family photos in Salem, OR

When Heidi and I planned a photoshoot on a Saturday in June, I think we were both picturing a balmy, sunshiny day at the park. But we are in Oregon after all, and Saturday morning dawned miserably gray and drizzly. Luckily it cleared up just enough that we were still able to wander the park for awhile. Gorgeous 2 year old Katie pulled on her boots and was quick to start smiling for my camera! She told me she saw a spider in it though…a big black one. I should probably get that checked out… :)

When the rain got to be too much, we were able to seek refuge at the carousel, since it happened to be family day and that meant a free ride!

Later, we got to see a few more beautiful faces at a family barbeque. :)
